My wife and I live in a century-old home in Sacramento, but also own 13 investment properties spread throughout Texas and California. In 2004, we bought a $300,000 investment property, a duplex in Midtown Sacramento, which we rent out. AdvertisementLast year, I built two cottages on the duplex's lot and began renting them out as ADUs. After several months of collaboration with the company's design team, we submitted an application to the city of Sacramento. AdvertisementWith Sacramento allowing up to 1,200 square feet per ADU, I chose to build two 600-square-foot cottages on the lot.

The staff serenaded me when I arrived at the resort, which is when I realized I was the only guest there. Kaila YuOne of the best parts of my stay was the staff's warmth and attention to detail. Then, I jumped on the resort's private plane to fly to Wakaya Island, which took just over 30 minutes. I booked the resort for its seclusion, but I thought there'd be guests in the few other cottages on the island. When I arrived, I realized I was wrong — it was just me and the staff for my entire stay.

But in stark contrast to the eight-figure homes is another common Nantucket practice: giving away homes for free. It is much cheaper, however, to move a "free" house onto a property than to construct an entirely new dwelling. Some of the 'free' homes do good for the communitySome of Nantucket's year-round workforce lives in repurposed "free" homes. Why designers are rethinking the toilet

CNN —Consider the toilet — that humble porcelain bowl that spirits away our waste several times a day. Rethinking how we deal with waste may also present an opportunity: Our excrement can be converted into renewable heat, electricity and fertilizer. Ugo CarmeniKnown as a “Huussi” in Finnish, the dry toilet separates urine from stool and is ventilated to keep odors out — In Finland, dry toilets are particularly prevalent in rural summer cottages, Renell told CNN in a video call. Kelsey McWilliams/Point of ShiftNow a water, sanitation and hygiene consultant for over ten years, McWilliams founded Point of Shift to create circular systems for clients within the US. The humble dry toilet and a large-scale urban sewage system may be at opposite ends of the spectrum, but they are both solutions to the same problem.

To house the evacuees of Grindavik, the Icelandic town where lava poured into some houses last week after a volcanic eruption, a former prime minister proposed building a new town from scratch. A politician said Airbnbs around the island nation should be restricted to make room for the residents. About 3,700 people lived there before the eruption, a significant number of residents for Iceland, whose total population is only 400,000. The authorities are scrambling to house the residents and contain their financial losses, and the issue is dominating the national debate. Residents of the town are living in hotel rooms, in summer cottages, in temporary rental apartments or are being hosted by family members.

The court decided the case was moot after the plaintiff at the center of the dispute, Deborah Laufer, dropped her lawsuit. We are not convinced, however, that Laufer abandoned her case in an effort to evade our review,” Barrett wrote. Jackson reiterated her concerns about when the court should and should not vacate lower-court rulings when a case becomes moot on appeal. Though the justices weighed that question during oral arguments, they spent a considerable amount of time trying to figure out if they should resolve the issue at all. The defendant’s website, everybody agrees, is now in compliance with the ADA,” liberal Justice Elena Kagan said during oral arguments.

On Nov. 8, 1971, Led Zeppelin released its iconic fourth studio album, which was untitled but is widely known as “Led Zeppelin IV.” It features the band’s major hit “Stairway to Heaven,” and the wordless cover shows the image of a bearded, older man with a large bundle of sticks on his back against the backdrop of a decaying wall. Now, 52 years later to the day, a minor mystery about that cover has been solved. Sometimes thought to be a painting, the image, it turns out, was a Victorian-era photograph of a man who made thatched roofs for cottages in Wiltshire, a rural county in southwestern England. His name was Lot Long and he was 69 at the time, according to Brian Edwards, a researcher who found the photo. As he was looking through a Victorian photo album full of landscapes and houses, Mr. Edwards noticed a photo he had seemingly seen before.

Acheson Hotels and the business interests supporting it argue that Laufer's admission that she wasn't planning to visit the hotel should end the case. In Detroit, a Tiny Home Generates a Big Controversy

The Tiny Homes, as they’re known, were built by a nonprofit group and have marble shower stalls, granite kitchen countertops and solar panels. They are intended for low-income residents who pay monthly rent of $1 per square foot, plus electricity, with the option to own the home outright after seven years. To date, there are 25 in a three-block area, occupied by residents that include seniors and people formerly homeless and incarcerated, and who earn as little as $7,000 annually. The first set opened in 2017, and construction is slated to begin this fall on a half dozen or so houses on a patch of empty land nearby. The project, which is owned and operated by Cass Community Social Services of Detroit, has been built through fund-raising from foundations and private donors, including rocker Jon Bon Jovi.
